Mast & Rig appraisals

As a conscientious sailor it’s important to have your yacht rig inspected regularly by a qualified and experienced rigger. The team at Mylor Rigging have many years of experience and accumulative knowledge under our belts and have honed our skills in this profession enabling us to provide a fully comprehensive and impartial overview of your rig from the deck upwards.

Just as you would service your boat’s engine each year, the same attention should be given to your rig set up and all the components that enable you to sail, making the most of the yachts natural source of propulsion.

The main priority is focusing on your safety at sea and the performance of your yacht. In short, a full MOT for your rig is a good idea. Many marine insurance companies now insist on periodic inspections, we suggest you check your policy.

Even if your yacht hasn’t been sailing, the rig is constantly exposed to the elements and the associated wear and tear. Our appraisals may highlight: -

  • Early indication of issues:  looking at signs of fatigue, crevice of galvanic corrosion on your spars.

  • Standing rigging: whilst it’s true condition may not be visible to the naked eye, from our knowledge and experience we can give you advice on maintenance and visible condition.

  • Running rigging: checking for UV degradation, chaffing & any other potential failures. Whilst also assessing and advising on the causes of damage.

  • Deck: Inspection of moving parts & control systems enabling the yacht to sail efficiently.

As part of the appraisal, you will receive a highly detailed report on all the rigging components from the deck up. This will contain photographs, descriptions of any issues found and recommendations on any remedial work. Having a regular appraisal, your yacht will build a detailed history and service record of all maintenance.

The importance of basic, routine maintenance should never be underestimated, as it may well prevent untimely and potentially dangerous failure. Any metal exposed to a corrosive environment will fatigue, and whether your rigging is rod or wire, it is generally accepted that every 3 years the fittings and terminals should be taken apart, cleaned, and re-assembled with the appropriate lubricants applied.

By following a few basic procedures, you can extend the life of your mast and rigging, this in turn will undoubtedly save you time and money. Our guidance for when to book a Mast & Rig appraisal:

  • After 1 year the rig should be inspected to ensure the mast was commissioned correctly. Tensioning will be required due stretching of the new wires.
  • After 2 years you should have a full rig inspection whilst the mast still stepped.
  • After 3 years the mast should be un-stepped and fully inspected on the ground.

So, when was your last mast & rig appraisal?
